In 1894, production of the Krag-Jorgensen rifle began at the Springfield Armory right here in the United States. In 1892, the Krag-Jorgensen rifle passed every test given by the United States military board of ordnance, making it the newest combat rifle adopted by the armed service. With that in mind, the pair decided to add a five-round, fixed magazine to the design. Captain Ole Hermann Johannes Krag and Erik Jorgensen of Kongsberg, Norway, takes the credit for the engineering that became the official standard issue rifle for the United States military.įirearms designers Krag and Jorgensen knew that the rifle they wanted to build must be bolt-action and be able to fire multiple rounds before running out of ammunition. Two Norwegian firearms designers developed the Krag-Jorgensen rifle.
